Features and Specifications
Based on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU 2 the Prophet comes in a sleek metallic finish and supports quad-band GSM, GPRS and EDGE. In addition it supports Bluetooth 2.0 and since it will be released with Windows Mobile AKU 2, it will also support the Bluetooth Stereo Headset Profile (A2DP). Unlike the forerunners Magician and Charmer, the Prophet has built-in WiFi capabilities with dual support of 802.11b and 802.11g aka WiFi b and WiFi g. Last but not least it still has an infrared-support.
Similar to the Magician, also the Prophet still has a 2.8″ QVGA touch screen (only), supporting 65,536 colors but now featuring a 2 mega pixel camera with an extra “macro-mode”. Unfortunately, also the Prophet doesn’t have - unlike the Universal (which is the only HTC device so far) - a photo light. So indoor shots with weak light conditions isn’t the strength of the Prophet. Following the latest trend, HTC continues to use the TI OMAP 850 CPU which provides - on one hand better stand-by times, on the other hand the OMAP 850 is working with 200 MHz only. While these 200 MHz are not comparable with Intel’s Bulverde 200 MHz CPUs but way more powerful, it’s still weaker than an Intel Bulverde CPU with 400 MHz.
The Prophet is the first Windows Mobile device by HTC which also supports WiFi g (which should provide you gross speed up to 54 Mbps). The Prophet isn’t a UMTS device but features GSM, GPRS and EDGE only. The Dopod 818pro brings unparalleled price performance and is the only one in the world to come in 5 different colours. It also comes with Bluetooth GPRS, Quad band GSM, EDGE and a 2-Megapixel camera with macro photo taking function. The industry prevalent MMC/SDIO slot, expanded memory size also brings extra cost benefits to consumers. Operating System Windows Mobile 5.0, Manufacturer Dopod , Processor Type Texas Instrument OMAP 850 , Processor Speed 195MHz , Memory 64MB RAM, 128MB ROM , Display Type TFT LCD, Display Resolution 320×240, Dimensions 58 (W) x 108 (H) x 18.2 (T) mm, Weight with battery: 150g, Battery Talk Time: 300 minutes Standby Time: 250 Hrs, Type: Rechargeable Li-ion, Built-in Expansions SD, SDIO, MMC, Add-on Expansions N/A, Synchronization Included: Bluetooth, Infrared connection, USB cradle with cable Available Separately: N/A
Conclusion
Perhaps the biggest selling point of the 818 Pro is its price. At S$938 (US$596.77) with a two-year plan, it’s considerably cheaper than the O2 Atom while offering almost the same feature set. All in all, although it doesn’t sport any new tricks or killer applications, the 818 Pro is a value-for-money choice for those looking for a convergent device that’s portable and versatile.
